What is Motivation?

Motivation can be described as a person’s ambition to complete a task. In the classroom, that ambition can be to learn new things, to read new texts, and to write new compositions. Motivation can come in many different forms; it can be intrinsic when a person’s motivation is a result of their own personal desires. Or it can be extrinsic when their motivation is a result of external factors, such as impressing someone else, earning a grade, or rewards.  Motivation can also come from the simple desire to be proficient in a skill, we call this competence motivation. There are learners who are motivated because they enjoy learning as well as learners who are motivated by the results of the outcome, not by learning the information (learning-oriented versus performance oriented).
