Genre knowledge is a reader’s ability to differentiate between different types or categories of artistic composition. A particular genre is characterized by common themes such as form, content, structure and all artistic compositions within that genre share these common characteristics. Examples include book genres, musical genres, and movie genres. More specifically, the genre of a text is defined by the objective of the text with characteristics of the text following from its objective. The genre of a text informs the reader of the purpose and the type of text. In addition, there are many different ways text is incorporated into our environment; consequently, there are many different types of genres. Examples of text genres are fantasy, nonfiction, fiction, labels, advertisements, and academic.
