Importance

Concepts of print are important because these are the building blocks for an emergent reader and writer. Before a child begins to read or write, they must understand the way print functions within a book or other reading material. For example, before a child can read a word, he/she must understand that a word is represented by a group of letters with a white space in between the next group of letters. A student’s concepts of print can be predictive of their future literacy development.
