What is Composition?

“Composition is the act of producing a piece of writing by bringing together writing processes, elements, strategies” (Writing and Composition PowerPoint). We use these pieces of writing to communicate our thoughts and ideas. The process of composition generally goes from planning to production to revision. In the planning stage, a writer organizes their thoughts into a logical order. Then, during the production phase, those thoughts are written down. And last, during the revision stage, the writer goes through and edits their work, and often times when they are done, they go through and revise again. Someone once said that “good writing is bad writing that has been rewritten” (Shanahan, 2009).
