Importance

Sound- letter knowledge is important because it aids in decoding and reading words, understanding the meaning of words, understanding the relationship between letters and sounds in English,  developing morphological awareness, and spelling. All these tasks are crucial to literacy development and provide a basis for high- level comprehension. A student must be able to relate the English sounds and letter, combine them together in a meaningful way to form a word, and then be able to extract meaning from that word. In other words, a student must master sound-letter knowledge, leading to the ability to recognize words, leading to fluency, which ultimately leads to the ability to comprehend and connect written and oral language.
